Rispetto all'eredità, non ci ho mai pensato.
Prima era truccarsi, avere i capelli lunghi… avere… Per me è una tortura andare all'hammam.
Ovvero per me.
Non so.

Mouna, a 30-year-old Tunisian woman, recounts her personal experience characterised for many years by desireing to be a boy. After the death of her father, Mouna dissolved and accepted the inner conflict between masculine and feminine also thanks to the loving complicity of her husband. In her testimony, Mouna reflects on the overall condition of women in Tunisia.

MOUNA: «My name is Mouna, I'm 34 years old, I was born in Tunis and live in Denden My father is from Jerba and my mother from Mateur. I was a French teacher then I started studying theatre and I worked in theatre and now I want to continue working with the theater and at the same time I started teaching theatre to young children.
When asked if I want to become a mother now, I said no, I don't want to be a mother just yet. I think in Tunisia, even if you're not directly influenced by the family, the extended family is always in your head, even if they don't ask you anything, even if they don't keep telling you, "Why aren't you a mother?" you think about them anyway. The influence is there even if it's not direct, I think there's pressure.
I grew up with my mother and with another woman I call my second mom. It's my mom's aunt actually, but younger than her, she has never married and she considers me as her daughter, she has never had children, she is a very important person in my life. Frankly, I don't want to think about what they say about her because it's a very sensitive issue. I don't want to imagine what they think of her because she's like a mom to me. I avoid listening to them, without a doubt they talk about her but I tried to hide everything they said about her.
There's a word, and it's a pretty bad word so I always forget her, it exists but I forgot it. There is a word but even the sound of it is bad, I don't like it, so even though I know it, I always, always forget it, in Tunisian.
Regarding my legacy, I never really thought about it I don't know if I'll have any inheritance to leave, I never thought about it. After your question about inheritance, I started thinking about it the family home we live in now could become a bookstore, a kindergarten or a cultural center. Now the idea came to me but before you asked me, I never thought about it…
Before this meeting, I thought many times about women with no children, that is, the fact that I do not want them. The matter has started for me because before I even ask myself the question of whether to be a mother, it's being a woman that's problematic for me. Or rather, it raises a lot of questions for me. I understood a lot about this. It is not obvious that since you have a sex, that you are a woman, you have a specific gender, male or female.
My father wanted to have a boy, from a very young age he wanted a boy, the second child. I lived a long time with that idea, of being a boy. And only recently I've accepted that you can be a boy and a girl at the same time. So to become a woman or a mother, it's even more… There's still work to be done. But it's about being a woman that made me think, at the beginning
Recently, all my friends are becoming moms and tell you about it, they tell you about motherhood, they are mothers who… They follow every little step of their children. All couples who have children say “Come on, now it's your turn”. But I can't tell them “I'm not going to” and at the same time I would do well instead to say I'm not going to have kids. I don't need to be a mother to have that relationship with the kids, I have that relationship with my nieces and nephews and I enjoy it very much. I think we're led to think about this for example when you get married, there is always the look that says: "when are you going to have children"? I thought about the possibility of having them, I'm afraid of that possibility too, because I don't know what I could offer my children, I'm afraid of my anguish. I'm afraid of… as everyone, I have some moments of depression, I'm afraid to pass them on to my kids. I don't feel at all ready to be a mom.
It really is a job to be a mother, they never sleep, they must always feed their children, they teach them to walk. It could be… a cook, a person who helps other people walk, I forgot the name. They tell stories to children; it really is a very demanding job. I don't think I'm ready for that at all. they talk about this, they speak of… [Tunisian word for menopause] I guess, I'm not sure, I think they say, "andi el faddama" as if to say "it's suffocating", with hot flashes. So, it's a description of menopause, it's not a single word…but I'm not sure. They say… Ah… it's not "fadda" but " el fawara", "fawara" is the heat… Very hot… Yes, "fawara". I have the fawara.
For me, in my history, in my short journey, the point is to accept what you are and this is done through stages. Accepting to be a woman, what does it mean.. It means to give the meaning that I would like to give, because before I was in the stereotype, I had a precise image of being a woman. Before, it was putting on makeup, having long hair… To have… Being well shaved… Indeed, everything that has to do with the body. Going to the hammam, undress without embarrassment because I noticed… In any case, my gaze is attracted by all women who stand with their shoulders straight, who are naked and they feel at ease… It's torture for me to go to the hammam. I wear a t-shirt, which is ridiculous at the hammam. It's also… I don't know Being sweet… really a stereotyped woman. And now being a woman for me is… Each has her own definition of what it means to be a woman. Each defines it in her own way. This is no longer a battle for me, it's no longer this battle between women or men who refuse… as a fight, who will win? Now, if I want to be a day like this and a day like that. And one day, not knowing who I am, I don't even ask myself the question. Now, I need to ask myself the question.
At the moment, for example, once again in relation to my father. I lost my father not long ago and with his death the boy had no sense of being there anymore. So… This was painful the mourning of the little boy… All this to say that I need to ask myself the question again, now. And when I had this revelation of … Dad's gone, so the boy had to go too. It was sad but it was also very liberating, I allowed myself the right to be stereotyped. Buy clothes, buy a jalaba. And it's nice to buy things that I like, I like it and I brought my husband a jebba [traditional male dress] and I called it the woman's jebba, meaning me. And he's "… ah… okay". The jebba had knotted and he told me, “Give me time to untie it, it's not a problem, I'll patiently untie it". I found it a very nice gesture… If society accepted this freedom to be both female and male, but no, it does not accept it.
Society assigns you a pre-established role, hence the suffering of many women in Tunisia who are forced to be mothers and women. And in every situation, even when I was teaching, there are professors, financially independent, who have the car, who are always sad, they don't come out. There's one who has a car, you could go out, we could go to Sidi Bouzid for a coffee and she looked at me like it was a revolutionary idea. “Yeah, we can do that, we can go out, we have some money…” She told me stories of teachers of History, French, Mathematics.
There is one whose husband spends his holidays in France, and she's imprisoned in the house, I say imprisoned because there is the uncle who watches over all the women in the family and when he hears her laugh, he calls his brother to tell him. How can that be! This is one of the cases which may seem very violent, but… See…she has to… You are responsible for the children, must be very good in the kitchen, all these things and you say to yourself this causes me anguish, I say "I don't know how to cook". I don't even feel like doing this. The act of cooking, for me, for example, it makes me panic. My husband tells me: “I can't cook all the time, come with me and I'll teach you”. I told him, okay. It was enough for him to come out of the kitchen to make me shout "what do I do"? Why does it make you so anxious? I don't know. As long as he comes out, I… If your entourage doesn't accept… But at some point, you have to… To make sure that… For the others to accept you must accept yourself. If you accept yourself, they no longer make sense, I'm not there anymore.»
